The Northern Fells was the fifth book published by Alfred Wainwright in 1962. The book covers the 24 fells from Caldbeck in the north to Keswick in the south, its eastern border being Mosedale and the western the shores of Bassenthwaite Lake. AW’s description – "The area of the Northern Fells is completely severed from the Lake District by Bassenthwaite Lake, the Vale of Keswick and the low country of the Glendaramackin River, which extend like a wide moat around the southern base of the group. West and north these fells are bounded by the coastal plain of Cumberland and east by the valley of Eden”.
