Batterie de Crisbecq June 1944 The German Marine Costal Battery Crisbecq was established at the beginning of 1942 by the Todt organisation. It had 21 Skoda canons, which could cover a large part of the Atlantic Wall, including the bay of Vire in front of Carentan. Under the command of Oberleutnant Walter Ohmsen, the battery was instrumental in the defence against the numerous assaults made by the 4th Infantry Division who landed at Utah on D Day. The battery commander even ordering the guns at nearby Azerville to fire on his own position to help drive off the American assault! Out of the 406 defenders only 76 men were forced to remain at the battery, which was eventually captured by 2nd Battalion on 12th June.
