Route Map
First ascent of Snowdon, and interesting mountain! We parked at Pen-y-Pass and followed the Miners’ Track past Llyn Llydaw, where ledged has it King Arthur disappeared under the cloud cover slopes of Crib Goch. On to Glaslyh the home of the monster dragged here from Betws-y-Coed. This is where the climbing starts, joining the Pyg Track and onto to the summit ridge. Enveloped in cloud, we were unable to see either the summit or the ridge! We knew we were close when the eerie sound of a steam train could be heard in the clouds. We join to queue to climb the final step to the summit, shrouded in cloud and with a cold wind we have to huddle behind the cafe wall with the other second rate citizens who own dogs. Talking with people on the summit and later in Betws-y-Coed, we agreed the building is well done but the service is poor only catering for those who’ve paid to come up on the train. No views, other than the red flesh of those shivering in their T-Shirts, we retrace our steps to the point where the Miners’ and Pyg tracks join to follow the latter to the car park. The weather now was clearing, with the occasional shower and swirling cloud. Two hours into the descent we pass a group of T-Shirt glad youths heading for the summit with one bottle of water. With only a couple of hours (at most) of daylight left I had to say something, it’s no wonder we read MRT callouts are increasing.
